Born on the November 14, 1840, we were graced with the birth of Claude Oscar Monet. His birth happened in Paris, France as he was born unto a shopkeeper, Claude Aldophe Monet and his stay-at-home wife, Louise-Justine Aubree. Although Monet's birthplace was Paris, his family moved to the Channel Coast at Le Havre. As he resided there, he and his brother, Leon Monet attended private school. As he pursued his art career, Monet made many friends: Pierre-Auguste Renoir,
Frédéric Bazille, and Alfred Sisley. Through his artwork, he was also able to meet his wife, Camille Doncieux. She concieved their first child in 1867. It was during this time that Monet was having financial problems and attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself in the Seine. Two years later, in 1870, they married. They still had some money issues as Monet was having trouble selling his oil paintings in an exhibition because his asking prices were too high. His wife gave birth to another child in 1878, but got very sick after the child's birth. She died of tuberculosis, a year later. It was during this time that the world was having some major events:
- 1870: Franco-Prussian War Begins
- 1881: Czar-Nicholas II of Russia- Assassinated
- 1888: First Victim of "Jack, The Ripper"- Murdered
- 1893: World Fair Opens in Chicago
- 1898: U.S. Declares War on Spain
After his wife's death, it was a struggle for Monet. However, he continued with his career, for the rest of his life. Claude Oscar Monet died December 5, 1926, at the age of 86. Three of his most famous works are Water Lilies, Impression Sunrise, and Bridge Over a Pond of Water Lilies. These were a few of his oil paints which displayed the Impressionism movement of art Monet was apart of.

You are so clever--your title made me lol. And I never say lol. I've always like Monet...and I love the exchange in Clueless about the girl at the party:
ReplyDeleteTai: Do you think she's pretty?
Cher: No, she's a full-on Monet.
Tai: What's a monet?
Cher: It's like a painting, see? From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess. Let's ask a guy. Christian, what do you think of Amber?
Christian: Hagsville.
Cher: See?
Classic 90s movie. : ) I got to see several of Monet's pieces at the Chicago Institute of Art a couple of summers ago.
I like that you chose Monet. He is not my favorite artist but I do like most of his pieces. I feel like he has a distinct way of painting. And from what I have seen most if not all of his art has flowers in it which I think is interesting. I think it was cool how even though it was hard for him after his wife died that he still kept doing his art. I feel like some artists stop after a hard time and lose the talent that they have.
ReplyDeleteNice job.
